One Essay Response

Climate change is advancing globally, impacting the vitality of at-risk glaciers. Yet tourism to these at-risk sites has yet to cease. The transformation of the wonder and awe of massive icy spaces to feelings of anticipated loss radically transform how these places are experienced. This image evokes just some of the complex ideologies carried by tourists, both in time and space. Together, families and friends alike have the ability to experience a framed environment, away from the contamination of urban spaces (as naturalists like Thoreau intended), and erasing any traces of the people who occupied these spaces before. The paved paths make “nature” accessible, the crowds echo boisterously from the photo, and the millennia-old giant looms in the background, providing purpose to the broader economic exchange underway.
